Why Building The Right Team Comes Before Business Strategy

Many business owners are drawn to the allure of new markets, customer segments, product ideas, and pricing tactics. And while these elements are crucial, they are secondary to the people responsible for executing them.

A strategy, no matter how brilliant, will fail in the hands of the wrong team. Conversely, even a mediocre strategy can outperform expectations when executed by the right people.

Let’s explore why the sequence of “people before plan” matters, the consequences of ignoring it, and how to prioritise team-building as the foundation for scalable, sustainable growth.

The Fallacy Of Strategy-First Thinking

It’s easy to get caught up in strategic planning. Vision statements, SWOT analyses, and market positioning exercises feel productive. But without the right people in the right roles, your plans will remain on paper.

Many business owners fall into the trap of designing a strategy in isolation, only to discover months later that their team lacks the skills, mindset, or alignment to bring it to life.

The result? Frustration, slow progress, missed targets, and a dangerous cycle of revisiting the plan instead of addressing the root issue-people.

Why The Right People Matter More Than The Right Plan

  • Execution Trumps Ideation – A brilliant idea poorly executed delivers mediocre results. An average idea well-executed can transform a business. Your people determine execution quality.
  • Adaptability is Human-Driven – No strategy survives unchanged. The ability to adapt in real-time comes from having self-aware, accountable, and competent people who can respond to challenges creatively and quickly.
  • Culture Shapes Behaviour – Your culture driven by your people determines how strategies are implemented. A strategy that requires collaboration will fail in a culture of silos and ego.
  • Speed and Agility Depend on Trust – Teams that trust each other make decisions faster, act without second-guessing, and course-correct quickly. Strategy slows down when your team doesn’t align or communicate effectively.

Signs Your Team Isn’t Ready for Strategic Growth

Before you refine your business plan again, check for these signs that your team might be the bottleneck.

  • You’re Constantly Chasing Tasks – If you’re always in the weeds, solving problems your team should handle, your structure or capability isn’t where it needs to be.
  • Decisions Stall or Backfire – If your leadership team struggles to make timely decisions-or makes poor ones-it’s a sign of a capability or alignment gap.
  • Morale is Low Despite the Plan – If your people are disengaged, burnt out, or resistant to change, your strategy won’t land, no matter how compelling it is.
  • Growth Creates More Problems – If every growth milestone leads to operational headaches or customer issues, it suggests your team isn’t built for scale.

Start With ‘Who’ Before ‘What’

Jim Collins, in his book Good to Great, said it best “First who, then what.” Get the right people on the bus, in the right seats, before you decide where to drive it. Here’s how to build the right team before refining your strategy.

Clarify Roles And Responsibilities

Every team member should have clear outcomes they are accountable for, not just a job title. Use tools like an accountability chart (not an org chart) to map what the business needs and who owns each function.

Hire For Values And Capability

Skill matters, but alignment with your values and vision matters more. Capability without commitment causes cultural misalignment. Focus on hiring slow and hiring right. If someone doesn’t match your values or standards, no amount of technical expertise will compensate.

Upgrade Where Needed

Be honest about current gaps. If your strategy requires a level of financial analysis, marketing execution, or operational rigour that your current team cannot deliver, don’t wait. Invest in upskilling, restructuring, or replacing roles that are holding the business back.

Create A Culture Of Accountability

High-performing teams take ownership, track their metrics, and deliver outcomes. If you’re micro-managing, it’s not a leadership problem-it’s a people problem. Build rhythms of weekly scorecards, one-on-ones, and team reviews to encourage accountability and improvement.

Strengthen Leadership Before Scaling

If you have a leadership team, they must function as a unit, not a collection of departments. Healthy conflict, shared goals, and collective accountability are non-negotiable for strategy to succeed. Your business will never outgrow the capability of its leadership team. Invest in their development early.

The Strategic Advantage Of People-First Businesses

Businesses that invest in people before they invest in strategy tend to

  • Grow faster with fewer roadblocks
  • Achieve more consistent results
  • Handle adversity with greater resilience
  • Build cultures that attract and retain top talent
  • Innovate naturally through empowered teams

Strategy is still critical-but it works best when your team is aligned, capable, and committed.

Build The Team, Then Build The Plan

Before you chase the next big idea or rewrite your business plan, pause and ask. Do I have the right people to execute this?

If not, that’s your strategy-building the team. Because a business that is clear on its purpose, aligned in its values, and built on the right people is unstoppable, regardless of market conditions.

Once the right people are in place, they will help shape, test, and execute the strategy alongside you, not just follow orders. And that’s how real, sustainable growth is built.
